You've made it to the final week! We are so proud of you! I hope you've had fun documenting the past and have learned a lot about your family along the way. What's on tap for the last week? Read on . . .

What have you been wanting to document that you haven’t attempted yet? Is there a wedding you’d like to highlight? The birth of someone special into your family? Did your grandfather come home from a war a hero? Were you the first in your family to graduate from college? Did you start a business that grew into a big success? 

I chose to document my great-grandparents story. Weddings were very simple in 1904. My grandma wasn't even sure if they went on a honeymoon.

designer's challenge week 11

We are in the home stretch! Only two weeks left of our designer's challenge! This week we are documenting keepsakes. I have numerous keepsakes just waiting for a home on one of my pages. What’s a girl to do with old birth certificates, love letters, telegrams and ticket stubs? Document them of course!

I love reading my grandmother’s old telegrams that my grandfather sent to her before they were married. They were short and sweet, but you can still feel the love that radiated through them. 

I decided to make a pocket to hold all of my telegrams. I then made sure to write about the telegrams and included how much a telegram cost to send in 1940--I just looked up that little fact online. I included a picture of my grandparents from around the time when these telegrams were sent.

designer's challenge week 10

This week we are taking a trip down memory lane to your school years. So much of our growing up experiences are centered around where we went to school and who we knew. I loved school growing up—well, until I got to 7^th grade and dealt with some not-so-nice girls. I am so glad those days are behind me! 

I chose to document my grandfather's senior year of high school. I was even lucky enough to have his report card from 1946! It's amazing to me that he was married two years later and had my mom one year after that. So young!

designer's challenge week 9

 

This week's topic is an event in history. I decided upon this topic the day before the events that took place in Japan--which would be considered a huge event in history. I've been praying all weekend for the families that have lost loved ones. Most of us were not personally affected by the events in Japan, but many of you have been affected by events in our country's history. It's great to document then so that people don't forget how various events can transform our lives. 

I chose to document the Great Blizzard of 1949. Over 100 lives were lost and over 1 million head of livestock. My grandparents and great-grandparents were both impacted by this storm. 

An event in history can be more than a storm. Was your grandfather in WWII? Did you ration food during a war? Stop by the store for your challenge and list of questions to get you thinking. You are going to love this week's product! Have a great day!

 

designer's challenge week 7

We are over half way done! Congrats on documenting your past! This week we are focusing on sibling relationships. I grew up with only one sibling, a brother. We got along most of the time, though there were a few years in there where we could have done without each other! Now that we are older (and wiser), we get along great and I always enjoy seeing him. My husband has 11 siblings—somehow they all stayed alive and didn’t kill each other. I can’t imagine the family dynamics in his household growing up!

I chose to document my grandmother and her three siblings. She was a "surprise" 14 years after the first three, so she did not grow up with them around as playmates.

designer's challenge week 6

We love seeing the layouts that you are bringing in! Keep up the great work! This week, we are focusing on fun and games. What did people do before the Superbowl was around to entertain them? I grew up in Minnesota where Superbowl and World Series parties were huge! Probably because it was too freezing to do anything outside. Was it sports you were into or board games? What did you do for fun?

I chose to document part of my dad's childhood. He came down with the polio disease two years before the vaccine was invented. He spent much of his childhood in a hospital undergoing various surgeries. He and the other boys in his wing had to come up with creative things to do for fun!

We can't wait to see what you create this week! You know the drill, bring your layout in for us to see and pick up your new challenge!

 

designer's challenge week 5

We are already in week 5 of the designer's challenge! Are you having fun yet? This week our focus is going to be fun--childhood homes! 

I grew up in several different homes. We lived in a house on a creek . . . where several leeches once attached themselves to me, we lived next to some noisy railroad tracks and we lived in a typical suburban home. One thing I remember is that homes back then seemed to be smaller than they are today. I often wonder if that meant less cleaning! 

I chose to document my grandmother's home--before electricity and indoor facilities! Yikes!

This week is all about family. It all starts somewhere and usually starts when two people fall in love. Do you have a great love story to tell? Did you write love letters to your intended and wait weeks for a response to arrive? What was dating like before email, facebook and texting?! 

I documented my grandparents wedding and honeymoon story. 

I loved using Basic Grey's Curio line for this layout! We have it here in the store!

designer's challenge week 3

Welcome to week three of our Designer’s Challenge . . . Heritage style! If this is your first stop here, you can scroll down through the previous posts for all the juicy details. 

This week we are focusing on community. The rollerskating rink was one of THE places to hang out when I was growing up. I would spend entirely too much time agonizing over what to wear to a skate day. Usually I ended up wearing the outfit with the most neon colors I could find! What I loved more than the skating itself, was the time to meet up with my friends and catch up on each others lives—this was a pre-email and texting era! 

This week I documented the impact my great-grandfather had in his community. He was the designer and builder of the Community Hall that hosted community dances for years to come. The 1937 building is still standing today, but I couldn't find a picture of it in my files or online. So, I did the next best thing. I snagged a satellite photo of where it stands today.

Welcome to week two of our Designer’s Challenge . . . Heritage style! If this is your first stop here, you can scroll down to last weeks post for all the juicy details. If you were asleep last week and missed the beginning of the fun, we’ll give you a one-week pass to jump on board and catch up!

This week we are focusing on the “growing up” years—either yours or a loved ones’. I grew up in the 1980’s, the decade of side-ponytails, leg warmers, boom boxes and cassette tapes. Back then everyone walked or rode the bus to school, ate Velveeta cheese without guilt and played Rubik’s Cube for fun. Do you ever wonder what is was like growing up before electricity was invented, before it was socially acceptable for women to wear jeans or when you had to actually milk a cow to get your milk?

Stop by the store to pick up your item that you will be challenged to use along with a list of questions to get you started. Remember to bring in your heirloom layout from last week to receive your point—and because really, we just want to see it!

I am participating in this challenge with you and I documented by grandmother’s growing up years (she had a twin) by interviewing her before she died.
